ESPN New York's Don LaGreca: NBA and NHL Need to 'Pull the Plug' on Their All-Star Games
The All-Star Game has long been a highlight of professional sports leagues, showcasing the best talent in a thrilling showdown. However, recent years have seen a decline in interest, both from audiences and participants.
The NFL's Pro Bowl, once a celebrated event, now resembles a series of challenges, struggling to maintain its relevance. The NBA and NHL are constantly experimenting with formats, but ratings and interest continue to fall. ESPN New York's Don La Greca, a well-known voice for the New Jersey Devils, suggests a radical solution: it's time to end these games.
"Basketball, hockey, and football need to be retired," La Greca stated in a recent episode of Don, Hahn & Rosenberg. "These games are supposed to celebrate their sports, but they've become a mockery."
La Greca reminisces about the All-Star Game's glory days, where the skills competition, dunk contest, and the main event were all part of a grand celebration. He recalls the excitement of the final scores, like 140-135, which would be unremarkable today. "It was a special occasion," he says, "but now it's just a chance to mock the sport."
In the NHL, La Greca highlights the absurdity of All-Star Weekend, where players like Alexander Ovechkin are suspended for refusing to participate. The league resorts to North America vs. the world and three-on-three tournaments, which lack the excitement of the past. Similarly, the NBA's All-Star Game has become a tournament, with load management and player comparisons overshadowing the game itself.
"Why would you want to showcase b*tching and moaning about your sport?" La Greca asks. "It's time to pull the plug and stop the mockery."
La Greca calls on NBA and NHL leaders, Adam Silver and Gary Bettman, to take a stand. He urges them to follow Roger Goodell's example and end the All-Star Games. "Man up and be done," he says. "Let's stop the charade and focus on the teams and players who truly matter."
The current NBA All-Star Game format is convoluted, and the NHL is skipping it due to the Olympics, which may benefit the league's image. La Greca believes that ending the All-Star Games could be a fresh start for both leagues, allowing them to refocus on what truly matters in the world of sports.
