In a recent update to the Model Y Owner's Manual, Tesla has shared a suite of tips to maintain battery health, offering a clear roadmap for maximizing range and performance.
While much of the advice aligns with long-standing community wisdom, Tesla has included a notably direct recommendation: avoid using Superchargers as your primary charging method. The manual now explicitly suggests that owners "save Supercharging for road trips or long drives" and instead prioritize Level 1 or Level 2 charging, such as wall outlets or Tesla Wall Connectors, for daily use.
The Battery Health Reality
Like any rechargeable device, Tesla's electric vehicles' batteries naturally degrade over time due to chemical reactions in charging and discharging cycles. Tesla defines battery health by the remaining original energy capacity. For example, a battery at 85% health means it has lost 15% of its capacity, resulting in 85% of the original driving range.
To protect the battery, Tesla uses sophisticated hardware and software. The vehicle automatically enters low-power mode when the charge drops to 0% to prevent damage. For added peace of mind, Tesla offers an extended warranty for the high-voltage battery.
Top Tips for a Healthy Battery
Tesla's updated guidance emphasizes the importance of charge cycles and avoiding low or high charge states. Here are the key tips:
- Stick to the 80% Rule: Unless you have a long drive, keep daily charges at 80% to protect the battery.
- Charge Frequently: Avoid deep discharge cycles by charging more often.
- Avoid Extremes: Don't leave the battery at 0% or 100% for long periods. Store it at around 50% and keep it plugged in if possible.
- Limit Parasitic Drain: Features like Sentry Mode and plugged-in devices can drain the battery. Tesla notes a daily discharge of 1% for onboard electronics.
By following these tips, owners can slow the natural aging process. As Tesla refines its battery chemistry and charging algorithms, these habits ensure long-term vehicle reliability.

Tesla Energy's LFP Battery Deal with LG

Tesla's energy storage business is booming, shipping Megapacks and Powerwalls at an unprecedented rate. To meet demand, Tesla is securing domestic battery supply.
LG Energy Solution has struck a deal to manufacture LFP batteries for Tesla's Energy Storage Systems, specifically for North American operations, at a facility in Lansing, Michigan.
The Lansing Facility
The 50 GWh/year plant will be one of LG's largest battery plants in North America. LG is converting production lines to focus on LFP for Tesla.
Mass production is expected in the second half of 2027.
Adding to Tesla's Capacity
Tesla is also building its own LFP plant in North America, which is operational and ramping up production.
Why LFP?
LFP is ideal for stationary storage, offering durability, safety, and cost-effectiveness. It degrades slowly, has zero thermal runaway risk, and eliminates costly minerals.
IRA Tax Advantage

Tesla's 7-Seat Model Y Returns to Europe

Tesla is targeting large European families with the return of the seven-seat Model Y configuration, absent since last year's refresh. It's now available with the Model Y Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive.
The seven-seat option costs €2,500 and is exclusive to the Premium Long Range AWD variant. It features forward-facing individual seats, black or white interior colors, a black headliner, an upgraded touchscreen, and new wheels.
Model Y L: Still a China Exclusive
The Model Y L, a longer version with a 2-2-2 seating layout, remains unavailable in Europe despite EU type approval. It's approved for sale in Australia, indicating a potential future arrival in Europe.
Performance and Practicality
The Model Y remains a powerhouse with seven people, offering a WLTP range of up to 600 km and a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.8 seconds. Storage behind the third row is 381 liters, expanding to 894 liters with folded seats.
